Kuartz – Lofi Scrolls (Not On Label)

Erstmalig ist „Kuartz – Lofi Scrolls“ im Juni 2017 erschienen, als digitales Album. Zwischen März und April 2019 wurde mit einer Crowdfunding-Kampagne bei QRATES das geplante Vinyl (Blue / White Splatter) vorfinanziert. Das Ziel von 100 Kopien wurde am Ende mit 173 gepressten Exemplaren deutlich übertroffen. Für das passende Artwork (OBI Strip „nur“ aufgedruckt!) ist Danny Proctor verantwortlich. Mix und Mastering hat unser heutiger Protagonist selbst erledigt.

»Lofi Boom Bap ripped from cassette and compiled for you you dirty lofi f***ers.« Klingt wie beschrieben. Leider. Denn mir persönlich ist das Vinyl etwas zu Lo-Fi. Klingt irgendwie nicht wirklich gut. Für ein Tape ok, aber von einer Platte erwarte ich da etwas mehr. Da bin ich vom guten Matt eigentlich anderes gewöhnt … Aber zurück zur Musik. Kuartz hat für „Lofi Scrolls“ 14 Instrumental Hip Hop Tracks produziert. Die Boom Bap Beats sind mit Samples aus der Golden Era und diversen Manga Voiceschnipseln gespickt. Für meinen Geschmack ist das alles ein bisschen zu viel des Guten, wirkt etwas überladen. Ich werde mit dem Album nicht so richtig warm. Meine Wertung: 6/10. Favoriten: „The Earth Scroll“ und „The Angel Scoll“.

HashFinger – ELSEWHERE (Headcount Records)

Über den 7-Zöller IWYMI INTNl: United Kingdom (Cold Busted) bin ich mal wieder auf diesen HashFinger aufmerksam geworden. Da war es echt mal an der Zeit, dass ich mich mit dem englischen Beatschmied etwas näher befasse. Seine Solo-Karriere umfasst bis jetzt drei Alben: „Lessons“, „Kites“ und „Elsewhere“. Alle drei Platten sind über das Label Headcount Records erschienen. Kurz im Internetz recherchiert und wenigstens „HashFinger – ELSEWHERE“ (HC042) zu einem vernünftigen Preis erstanden. Die beiden Vorgänger habe ich mal auf meine Suchliste gepackt. Also wenn die jemand loswerden will … Aber das nur am Rand.

HashFinger hat für das 2017 erschienene Album 16 Instrumental Hip Hop Tracks produziert. Zwischen den Titeln sind kaum Übergänge bemerkbar und machen das Vinyl damit zu einer Art Mixtape. Die exzellenten Boom Bap Beats unterstützt der Beat Smith aus Bradford, UK mit Samples von staubigen Platten aus Europa und dem Orient, die er auf diversen Reisen durch ANDERSWO eingesammelt hat. Gefällt mir richtig gut die Scheibe. Meine Wertung: 9/10. Favoriten: Light, Moonspell und Back Home. Ein paar Kopien liegen noch bei VinDig rum. Bei Gefallen solltet ihr schnell zuschlagen …

The Bare Dusty Beat Tape 2 (Millennium Jazz Music)

Fast zwei Jahre nach dem ersten Teil beglücken uns Bare Beats und Dusty Ohms endlich mit Volume 2 vom „The Bare Dusty Beat Tape“. Der kompakte und analoge Datenträger ist wieder über das Londoner Label Millennium Jazz Music (MJM144) erschienen und ist auf schmale 50 Kopien limitiert. Die beiden Beatschmiede haben sich wieder brüderlich die Seiten geteilt. Auf Seite A sind 12 Tracks von Bare Beats zu bewundern und die B-Seite wurde von Dusty Ohms mit 15 Instrumentals extrem gut versorgt.

Das Tape ist prall gefüllt mit oldschoolige Beats zwischen Boom Bap und Lo-Fi, die mit famosen Samples aus Jazz und Soul garniert wurden. Grandioses Tape, großartige Produzenten, exzellentes Label, beide Daumen hoch. Die Kassette und das digitale Album könnt ihr euch auf der Bandcamp-Seite von MJM zulegen. Simiah & The Phantom Ensemble – Connections

Mit „Simiah & The Phantom Ensemble – Connections“ haben Simiah, Dan Somers und Craig Crofton ihr Band-Debüt abgeliefert. Das Vinyl der Jungs aus Bristol ist über das Label KingUnderground Records (KU-049) erschienen. 200 Kopien sind in schwarzes Gold gepresst worden. Zusätzlich haben es 100 Exemplare auf rotes Polyvinylchlorid geschafft. Simiah und das Phantom Ensemble haben für die EP 10 Tracks produziert. Die Instrumental Platte ist mehr Jazz als Hip Hop. Drums und Samples von der MPC sowie live eingespielte Instrumente machen hier den grossen Unterschied. Entstanden ist ein sehr bedächtiges – vielleicht etwas zu kurz geratenes – Werk mit garantierter Jazzkeller-Atmosphäre. Meine Wertung: 8/10. Favoriten: Grit und Dragon Master.

Auf der Bandcamp-Seite vom Phantom Ensemble oder direkt beim Label sind noch ein paar Platten der Black Edition verfügbar. Aber auch in den Online-Auslagen von deejay.de (schwarz) und HHV Records (rot) wurden eine Hand voll Kopien gesichtet.

Gee Bag x Downstroke – Heavy Baggage EP (Revorg Records)

Über das Londoner Label Revorg Records ist im Januar 2019 die EP „Gee Bag x Downstroke – Heavy Baggage“ erschienen. Der DJ und Produzent Downstroke hat für den 12-Zöller vier Beats gebastelt, auf die Gee Bag (feat. Kissy K) seine Verse gerappt hat. Auf der B-Seite sind die Instrumentals verewigt. Gut so. Denn die sind richtig stark. Sauber produzierte Boom Bap Beats, oldschoolige Samples und passende Cuts beherrschen die komplette Platte. Auch der Rap-Style vom „End of The Weak 2016 UK Champion“ kann voll überzeugen. Beats und Rap passen perfekt zusammen. Und wenn das ein bekennender Instrumental-Fan schreibt, dann wiegt das doppelt schwer ;-) Meine Wertung: 8/10.

Die „Heavy Baggage EP“ ist direkt auf der Bandcamp-Seite des Labels als Vinyl ~~und Kassette~~ verfügbar. Die Platte könnt ihr aber auch bei den bekannten Online-Dealern wie HHV Records oder Vinyl Digital ordern.
