Mit Step Down und dem self-titled Album Sure Fire Soul Ensemble ist die in San Diego ansässige Funk Kapelle im Vinyl-41-HQ schon massiv vertreten und wird relativ oft gespielt. Jetzt liegt frische Ware auf dem heimischen Thorens: „GEMINI“. Die Platte ist natürlich wieder über Colemine Records (CLMNLP12070) erschienen.
»In Latin, the word Gemini denotes “two together” or “twins” […]« Jazz und Funk. Nicht unbedingt eineiig, aber unbedingt kompatibel. Die 9-köpfige Band hat es erneut geschafft ein Album zu produzieren, dass von vorn bis hinten durchhörbar ist, gute Laune verbreitet und absolut zeitlos ist. Damit besteht – wie schon bei den beiden Vorgängern – keine Verstaubungsgefahr. Großartiges Album!

The Winston Brothers aus Hamburg hatte ich bisher nicht so wirklich auf dem Schirm. Sie wurden mir über einen Newsletter vom Label Colemine Records reingespült. „Drift“ nennt sich die Platte, die seit November 2022 sehr regelmäßig rotiert. 11 instrumentale Tracks zwischen Funk, Soul und Reggae haben der Produzent Sebastian Nagel und der Schlagzeuger Lucas Kochbeck im Style der groovigen 60er und 70er eingespielt. Beide dürfte man von der Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band kennen. Aber das nur kurz am Rande. Das Album ist voller guter Laune und lässt lässig die Hüften der Zuhörenden zappeln. Hier im Vinyl-41-HQ wird übrigens die HHV Exclusive Coke Bottle Clear With Yellow Swirl Vinyl Edition aufgelegt. Musikalisches und optisches Schmuckstück!

Bestes Statement von Jason Wooderson aus Chicago, Illinois, USA. Das beschreibt die Platte „Pale Jay – Bewilderment“ wirklich gut. Der Nachfolger von The Celestial Suite ist IMHO nicht ganz so stark wie der vinyle Erstling, aber trotzdem eine absolute Empfehlung aus dem 41er-HQ. Die Falsettstimme und die Produktionen vom maskierten Beatschmied gefallen wieder auf Anhieb und von vorn bis hinten. Großartiges Album in Neo-Soul!

Über das Independent Label Colemine Records bin ich bei meinen vinylen Ausflügen immer mal wieder gestolpert. Die Compilation Brighter Days Ahead aus dem Jahr 2020 hat mir dann deutlich aufgezeigt, welche Perlen aus Soul und Funk bei dem Label unterwegs sind.

Es wurde also mal so richtig Zeit, dass ich mich mit der Plattenbutze aus dem beschaulichen Loveland, Ohio, USA etwas näher beschäftige. Als erstes Ergebnis kann ich den folgenden kleinen Vinylstapel vorweisen. Und ich fürchte, das war erst der Anfang …
